Write With Your Ear: the art of fiction with Curdella Forbes
Sat. 23 November 2013, 11am – 4pm
This Inscribe Masterclass, ‘Write It with Your Ear’, with acclaimed Caribbean writer Curdella Forbes explores the art of fiction. We’ll be looking in a general way at how writers ‘write down the bones’—plot, point of view, characterization, etc, but we will zero in specifically on characterization and dialogue. Dialogue is the heart of characterization — so this will be about making dialogue work, taking out the wood and putting in the zing!
Shape characters that talk like real people; give them their own rhythm and style. Write clean, musical prose; do the work of a five-minute speech with a single line; transform a situation; advance the plot. This is what we’re aiming for!
We’ll look at examples from some of the best writers. We’ll do exercises to get our writing spirits dancing, and exercises to move our dialogue to where we want it to be.
Curdella Forbes is the critically acclaimed Jamaican author of Songs of Silence (Heinemann 2002, 2010); Flying with Icarus and Other Stories (Walker Books 2003), a collection of stories for younger readers; A Permanent Freedom (Peepal Tree 2008); Ghosts (Peepal Tree 2012). She is currently Professor of Caribbean Literature at Howard University, Washington DC. Her most recent novel, Ghosts, set on the futuristic Caribbean island, is written in English and accessible, lyrical Jamaican Creole, and displays Curdella Forbes’ signature gift for lyrical, multi-voiced expression as this haunting sequence of narratives builds to tell a compelling tale of murder, psychological mayhem and love.
Praise for Curdella Forbes
‘…an artist in absolute command of her medium’ — Times Educational Supplement
‘… Forbes deftly constructs a world that is dynamic…and deeply spiritual… She boldly confronts issues of sexual identity, national and personal belonging, abortion and racism with…characters that are truly believable’—Journal of West Indian Literature
